We are greatly saddened to announce that Miss Jeanne Bisgood CBE died peacefully on Wednesday, 15th May 2024. Jeanne, an Honorary member of Surrey Women's Golf, was by all accounts a wonderful character who lived to the magnificent age of 100.
Jeanne's golfing heyday was in the 1950s. She won the English Women's Amateur Championship on three occasions, in 1951,1953 and 1957, and played in the Curtis Cup in 1950,1952 and 1954. She was also the non-playing Captain of the Curtis Cup team in 1970. In 1949 and 1951 she represented GB in the matches against Belgium and France, which later become the Vagliano Trophy. She also represented England five times in the Home Internationals between 1949 and 1958.
Beyond golf, Jeanne studied History at the University of Oxford in 1941 but left after a year to join the Women's Royal Naval Service. She worked at Stanmore, an outstation of Bletchley Park, and after the war she trained as a barrister. In 1954, she moved to Poole in Dorset and joined Poole Council, working in the area of education. She was also a magistrate.
Jeanne was a member of Parkstone Golf Club for over 80 years and was its first Lady President.
Jeanne was awarded the CBE in the 1982 Birthday Honours as Chairman of the Dorset Education Committee. She was given an honorary Doctor of Education at Bournemouth University in 2018.
All at Surrey Women's Golf send their deepest sympathies to Jeanne's family.
