The Surrey First team got off to a great start at National County Finals at Stover Golf Club in Devon, winning both their matches on day one. The format for all matches is two foursomes followed by three singles.
The morning match saw the Pinkies take on Norfolk. The two foursomes pairings of Emily and Annabel Peaford and Lottie Woodham and Mia Ingham put in strong performances, both sealing victory early on 5&4 and 5&3 respectively. In the singles, Canice Screene faced Tiff Mills, who was having a great day on the greens. Canice battled valiantly but eventually succumbed 2&1. Similarly, Matilde Santilli struggled against a consistent opponent in Harriet Allsebrook who took victory 4&2. Herry Ji was the only winner in the morning singles with a 3&2 win against Immy Leeder.
In the afternoon, the opponents were Lancashire, who had also been victorious in the morning session. Katie Laud and Abbi Rowlands teed off in the first foursomes. Having gone 3 down after six, they clawed their way back, finally taking victory 4&2 following a five hole winning streak. Emily Peaford and Matilde Santilli also won their foursomes. They were four up after 10 but a nervy patch at the start of the back nine meant they only claimed victory 2&1. In the afternoon singles,Annabel Peaford played a fantastic match against Catherine Roberts, trading pars and birdies all the way to the 18th hole. There was never more than one hole in it, with Annabel holing a 15 foot putt on the 17th to come back to all square. However, as had happened on several occasions, Catherine rolled in a 30 foot birdie putt on the 18th to take victory by one hole. In the other two singles, Herry Ji lost 3&2 to Daisy Lee, while Canice Screene took the honours 4&3 against Elizabeth Stebbings.
A good start but only day one! Tomorrow (Saturday 21st) sees the Pinkies taking on Nottinghamshire in the morning and then Dorset. Go Pinkies!
